Stronger Together Israel Solidarity Event (full recording)

Yesterday evening, October 11, 2023, Yeshiva University held an event in Lamport Auditorium called “Standing Together.” This event allowed the YU community to show their support and solidarity for Israel. Standing Together was packed, with so many people coming to defend and advocate for our people, our country, and our homeland. It was so packed, there were long lines to even get into the full auditorium. The event started with a short but meaningful video showcasing several Jewish rallies around the world over the past few days, as well as clips of soldiers in Israel going off to fight. We then heard from some of YU’s faculty, starting with Vice Provost Dr. Erica Brown, and some moving speeches by Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Hershel Schachter and YU’s President Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman. We also watched a video from Gabi Sackett, YU’s Israel Program Director, who has been called up from reserves to serve in the IDF.Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also shared a heartfelt message. On the Chanukkah, invest in your future

I am proud to share that over 500 people came together tonight at our 99th Hanukkah Dinner to celebrate and honor our heroes - our chayalim, our students, our Faculty, lay leadership and Rabbis who are leading our community during these times. This year, more than other years, the importance of YU has never been more clear. This year more than others, our needs have never been so high. With the need for additional scholarships, increased security and mental health support, programming for Israel and against antisemitism, we need your partnership in order for us to continue to rise.

Notes from Gaza, Part 1

Last week I joined the brave IDF soldiers in Gaza. Riding across the border was one of the most terrifying moments of my life: full military gear, armed escorts, machine guns drawn, bullets in the chambers. I witnessed the daily risks our soldiers take in defending the Jewish homeland. We passed the border fence that the terrorists broke through on October 7, the pockmarked houses and rubble of villages, and we came to the outskirts of the area where the IDF was actively operating. I was amazed by the professionalism, speed and dedication of the soldiers. During the visit, Hamas attacked a patrol nearby, and ten minutes later, the military ambulance that extracted two wounded soldiers pulled up in front of my jeep. As we prayed for the soldiers’ wellbeing, a helicopter was called in and in just a few minutes the wounded were medevaced to the nearest hospital and have since fully recovered

On the eve of Yom HaShoah, I am standing in Poland about to begin the March of the Living with thousands of students who have gathered from around the world to walk to Auschwitz in the footsteps of those who were killed in the Holocaust. This year, in consideration of the campus unrest throughout the country, the organizers of the event invited me to lead the march with a delegation of university presidents. The message of this moment could not be more clear. The dangers of allowing hate to go unchecked are real.

I always thought that Har Sinai was a celebration for the Jewish people; after this wedding I understand that it was also a celebration for God. In the rabbinic midrashim, God approached many nations to attempt a match for the Torah, but each one fell short. How happy Hashem must have been to find the perfect match for the Torah with the Jewish people. (from Conclusion)

The future of ethics in AI: A global conversation in Hiroshima

Last week, I had the honor of representing the Jewish people at the AI Ethics for Peace Conference in Hiroshima, Japan, a three-day conversation of global faith, political and industry leaders. The conference was held to promote the necessity of ethical guidelines for the future of artificial intelligence. It was quite an experience.....The climax of our three days came when the assembled leaders signed onto the central document, known as the Rome Call, which outlines the core principles necessary for ethical AI: transparency, inclusion, accountability, impartiality, reliability, privacy, and security.

As we approach Rosh Hashanah, we find ourselves reflecting on a year that has tested us in ways we could never have imagined. Our Yeshiva University community mourned the loss of our brothers and sisters, advocated on behalf of our hostages and prayed for the safe return of those displaced from their homes. As a father of children living in Israel, one an IDF combat soldier twice called to duty this year, I have never felt the same sense of vulnerability that I have experienced this year. Today’s news with Israel under attack highlights the real and present danger felt throughout the Jewish world.
