You will be introduced to a wide array of commentaries from ancient to modern times, with a primary focus on understanding Rashi and Ramban. While our analysis of the text will be thorough, we will always focus on understanding the profound messages of the Torah as applicable to our lives. Topics that will be studied over the course of the semester will include but not be limited to: 1. An introduction to the Sefer 2. The creation of man in G-d’s image 3. What, exactly, are the markers of sanctity that distinguish תנ"ך from secular literature generally? Rather than focusing on fundamental differences between religious and secular literature, e.g., one is divinely authored, the other is not, we will ask how those fundamental differences have affected the way that תנ"ך has been treated and interpreted throughout Jewish history. We will examine these great figures as individuals acting within the historical moment and as role models for future generations. This will be achieved through a very close study of the Peshat and a comprehensive analysis of the traditional Rabbinic literature ranging from the earliest extant Midrashim to later Parshanim. The different commentaries will be studied comparatively to discern the various approaches to Biblical exegesis in general and to the roles and contributions of women in particular. We will study Miriam, Bnot Zelaphad, Devorah, Yael, Chana, Avigayil, and Huldah. Objective 2: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which the feminine personae of ספר בראשית shape the unique character of the nation of Israel as well as other related nations. GOAL 2: This course will aim to develop comprehensive character portraits for each of the women studied in .ספר בראשית Objective 1: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the complexities and multidimensionality of these female personalities. Objective 2: Students will be trained to investigate how to recreate these amalgamated portraits through a close examination of the direct and indirect character indicators presented in the biblical text. Objective 3: Students will reflect critically on the ways in which biblical commentators perceive the personalities of the female figures in ספר בראשית , and how and why they sometimes diverge in their evaluations of their actions and behaviors.
