    Towards an Unprincipled Judaism. [video]
(Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies., 2020-02-10) Rynhold, Daniel
The great medieval Jewish theologian Saadia Gaon claimed that the "Jewish nation is a nation only by virtue of its laws." In line with this idea, many medieval Jewish thinkers turned their attention to the project of ta'amei ha-mitzvot - rationalizing the commandments - and appealed to general ethical or rational principles in the process. But is such an endeavor a fool's errand? In this lecture, we will argue that it is, not by arguing that Jewish practice is not rational, but by developing an alternative Jewish philosophy of practical justification that eschew principles altogether.

Library Book Talk: Aaron Koller on Unbinding Isaac: The Significance of the Akedah for Modern Jewish Thought
(New York, NY: Yeshiva University Libraries. Yeshiva University., 2020-09-14) Koller, Aaron; Holderness, J.B.; Weiss, Tina
Unbinding Isaac takes readers on a trek of discovery to insight into the binding of Isaac story for our times. The early nineteenth-century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard viewed the biblical story as teaching of suspension of ethics for the sake of faith, and in the twentieth century Jewish thinkers developed this idea as a cornerstone of their religious worldview. Koller examines and critiques Kierkegaard’s perspective—and later incarnations of it—on textual, religious, and ethical grounds. He also explores the current of criticism of Abraham in Jewish thought, from ancient poems and midrashim to contemporary Israel narratives, as well as some of the many ways Jews have responded to the Akedah over the generations.
