We will engage with diseases whose impact on the individual impacts society and diseases where societal norms and standards influence understanding and progression. We will discuss our current methods for assessing and understanding the burden of disease on our society. Recent experiences with Covid-19 and public health will be used as a springboard to discuss many of the intersections of public health and biology. As the pandemic is still emerging (and we are hopefully moving toward endemicity), this semester may be fluid because living through a public health emergency and experiencing the successes and failures of public health will provide the best lessons of allItem Restricted BIOL3830RN: Intro to Neurobiology(Stern College for Women, Yeshiva University, 2022-01) Alves, Chrystian JunqueiraNeurobiology is the branch of biology that deals with nervous system functions and structures. More specifically, it focuses on the cells and tissues of the nervous system and ways in which they form structures and circuits for perceiving and controlling the body and the environment. This system includes familiar structures, such as the brain and spinal cord, and nerves. Neurobiology is a very broad scientific field, and this course will provide an introduction to its main concepts and key mechanisms necessary to understanding more complexes themes covered in Neurobiology 2. Nerve cells and their organization into complex nervous systems and the major concepts in neurobiology, including impulse conduction, synaptic transmission, sensory processing, motor function, and synaptic plasticity will be covered. During the whole course, Neurobiology will be presented in an evolutionary perspective. Practical aspects of the field, such as the study of neuropathologies will be covered in each lecture. In the laboratory portion of this course, students will: • become familiar with, and proficient in, microbiology laboratory techniques • learn to follow written experimental protocols • interpret and analyze results • develop science writing skills (for more in-depth course goals, see page 3)Item Restricted BIOL3830: Neurobiology(2021-01) Mirjany, ManaThis neuroscience course provides a comprehensive introduction to the mammalian nervous system, with particular emphasis on the structure and function of the human nervous system. The primary goal of modern neuroscience is to understand the higher functions of the nervous system (such as memory, learning, perception, consciousness) in terms of the biology of nerve cells. In the first part of the course the emphasis is on understanding the following topics: neuronal cell structures and functions, glial cell types, how neurons send information by way of action potentials, communication between neurons and other cells at the synapse, and neurotransmitter systems. The second part of the course will consider the structure of the human brain and spinal cord, nervous system development, and one system will then be considered in detail, the auditory system. In the last part of the course the development of connections between neurons and the molecular mechanisms behind learning and memory and repair and regeneration in the nervous system will be considered. Throughout the course relevant clinical information and diseases will be discussed. Particular diseases as well as topics in neuroscience will be considered through reading of relevant scientific articles to expand on topics covered first in lecture.Item Restricted BIOL3750H: MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY(2021-01) Vigodner, MargaritaThis course will review major human metabolic pathways with the focus on biochemical alterations that accompany a wide range of human diseases and conditions. An emphasis will also be on advanced methods of molecular medicine used for diagnostic and treatment of genetic and metabolic disorders. The course will consist primarily of lectures, complemented with classroom discussions and case study assignments. During the semester, students will give short presentations to the class on a given topic.Item Restricted BIOL3728Y: Human Physiology Laboratory(2021-01) Berger, TehillaNatural science laboratories are designed to be hands on and in person experiences for students. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, last semester did not allow for that, and the Biology Dept. understands that many students are still not comfortable attending classes in person. Therefore, this section of Human Physiology Lab will be a completely remote learning experience. However, the design of our labs is intended to be of a unique blend of online learning/experiments, analysis of journal research and clinical trials, student experiment projects, and video presentations and discussions. Given the current situation, the lab course does not have a required text/manual accompanying it. Of course, students should reference the text being used in lecture.Item Restricted BIOL3728C: Human Physiology(2021-01) Weiss, RichardGoals: To gain a fundamental understanding of basic principles of physiology in an integrated fashion. Understanding how each organ system operates at both a cellular level and functional level is the first goal, with gaining an appreciation of how the various organ systems work in a precise and cooperative way. Objectives: To learn in detail the mechanisms of normal function of organ systems. Specific diseases will be discussed to reinforce the normal physiology, as well as to apply the understanding of the normal state to the pathologic state.
