ARTS1050B: Introduction to Art

Abstract

This course explores the production of art from the Prehistoric to the Modern era (roughly 30,000 BCE to the early twentieth century CE). We will seek to understand the relationship between art and culture, paying particular attention to how art, its meaning, function and reception are shaped by the social and historical ideals and conditions of the period. The class will consider art in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, photography and decorative arts. We will approach each period using a small group of objects or monuments to illustrate distinct themes and to gain a richer understanding of the character of the society and the nature of its artistic vision. By stressing the importance of analyzing each work within its own particular cultural perspective and of looking at works of art closely, the course encourages students to develop their skills of critical and visual analysis. Primary source texts will be used to prompt class discussions that explore the relationship between works of art and cultural traditions and ideals. Two paper assignments will be based on first-hand analysis and interpretation of works of art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art or other local museums.
