Abstract: COURSE DESCRIPTION This course equips aspiring clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, plan, and implement effective interventions for people with communication disorders. The course will cover assessment tools, clinical writing (e.g. progress reports, daily charting, etc.), and intervention planning. The Clinical Methods course includes an observation component (25 guided observation hours). Prerequisite: SPAU 3009, 3201, 3205 Synchronous: Live instruction will take place each week. Your attendance and participation are mandatory as per University policy and state guidelines. You are expected to come to class with questions that you have learned from the asynchronous material and engage in discussion. Asynchronous: Each week there will be asynchronous material in which you will be responsible for completing. This may include viewing lectures, reading/reviewing PowerPoints, completing course readings, and/or participating in discussion boards. Any assigned activities to support your learning are expected to be completed prior to class. These materials are being provided to help support the complexity of the learning you are required to obtain over the course of the semester. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Take a comprehensive case history 2. Use professional writing mechanics to write goals, session plans, and progress notes for clients with a variety of communication, hearing, and feeding/swallowing disorders 3. Write observation reports for at least 25 hours of clinical observation as required by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) 4. Describe various therapeutic interventions and behavioral techniques used by speech- language pathologists and audiologists
