E DESCRIPTION This course explores the anatomical and physiological characteristics of the hearing mechanism and speech mechanism. Students will be able to identify pertinent anatomical structures important for the production of speech and the sensation of hearing, describe the physiology thereof, and be able to define/describe various pathologies of these systems that may affect hearing, communication, feeding, and swallowing. Synchronous: Live instruction will take place each week. Your attendance and participation are mandatory as per University policy and state guidelines. You are expected to come to class with questions that you have learned from the asynchronous material and engage in discussion. Asynchronous: Each week there will be asynchronous material in which you will be responsible for completing. This may include viewing lectures, reading/reviewing PowerPoints, completing course readings, and/or participating in discussion boards. Any assigned activities to support your learning are expected to be completed prior to class. These materials are being provided to help support the complexity of the learning you are required to obtain over the course of the semester. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the anatomical, physiological and neurological bases of speech, language and hearing and explain them in scientific terms. 2. identify pathologies of the anatomical, physiological and neurological systems involved in speech and hearing. 3. Identify the effects of pathologies on the production and reception of speech and language.en_US
