Abstract
This course will present and analyze the Book of 1 Shemuel in which the Jewish monarchy system was established. The opening song of Channah introduces us to the main themes of the book: 1) God’s sovereignty over His nation, despite human failure, and 2) kingship. Shemuel, the last judge, prophecies for the Jewish nation and fights their enemies without failure and yet despite this, the Jewish people demand a king. The prophet, through the guidance of God anoints the first two kings of Israel: Shaul and Dovid in the first book of Shemuel. The detailed narratives of the reign of these two kings justifies the concerns of the prophet regarding kingship. A Jewish system of monarchy will succeed to rule and inspire the nation, only if the monarch remains faithful to God and His instructions. Total destruction of the king and people will result if they turn to wickedness.
