E DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the study of modern terrorism and other types of asymmetric violent conflict. It explores terrorism’s definitions, history and typology with a particular focus on the 21st Century. Topics will include: the origins and rise of Al Qaeda and ISIS; states-sponsorship of terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Kata'ib Hezbollah; terrorist financing, organization, and recruitment; and the growing threat of domestic violent extremists (DVEs) in the United States and around the world. In addition to our study of terrorism and terrorist groups, we will look at other types of asymmetric conflict, including: insurgency and guerilla warfare; cyberwar; and so-called "gray zone" conflict or "shadow wars." The objectives of the course include: 1) exposing students to the complexities of modern terrorism and violent conflict; 2) challenging students to think critically about solutions and approaches to terrorism and other potential threats to international peace and stability. Note on the Syllabus: While the course is not a “current events” course, there are obvious and non-obvious connections to current events, and from time to time changes might become necessary or desirable. I reserve the right to modify this syllabus, with the stipulation that any changes will be communicated to the entire class clearly and in writing.en_US
