Abstract
The course will focus on some of the major topics relating to the introduction and acceptance of Shabbos, Tosefes Shabbos and Hadlakas Neros Shabbos. A number of other subjects, such as Amira Li’nochri, Kavod and Oneg Shabbos, Bein Hashmoshos, will be discussed in the context of these topics.
While the Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah are the most essential sources, we will sometimes also trace the Halacha from earlier sources in Chazal and Rishonim, to better understand the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch. There will be a strong emphasis on the practical application of the Halacha (Halacha Le’maaseh), and therefore later Poskim and contemporary She’elos U’Teshuvos will often be cited. There will be an emphasis on understanding the Halachic process and how normative Halachic practice emerges from careful analysis of the issues.
Sources will be provided. In order to cover ground, the class will sometimes be in lecture form, without constant reading from texts.
