JUDS 1491 - K Interpersonal Relationships & the Workplace

Abstract

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course will consist of a study of various religious challenges that confront an observant Jewish woman in the workplace. The course will encompass the following topics: 1) Engagement & distinctiveness: Attending parties & social gatherings, eating and drinking together, holiday gifts and greetings 2) Kashrus: microwaves, keeping food in the fridge, eating in non-kosher restaurants 3) Relating to other Jews: Lifnei iver (a) asking or helping non-observant Jews to do an aveira [e.g. ordering non-kosher food], (b) Rotations – switching with non-observant Jew, (c) doing business with other Jews, Lashon Hara (e.g. review of another Jew’s work) 4) Integrity & ethics: truthfulness, Geneivas Daas (deception), stealing, inappropriate competition - These topics will be examined by studying primary sources from the Talmud, Rishonim, Shulchan Aruch, and later authorities, while applying the principles and concepts to contemporary settings and situations. The course presumes a strong background in learning topics in Halacha from primary sources. As well, there will be discussion of the value system which underpins these laws and which constitutes the spirit of the Law.
