Abstract
General description: Organic chemistry is the basis of various fields; from biology to materials science. Biologists and doctors rely on organic chemistry to explain many of the processes that occur in living organisms. The design of drugs on one hand, and of new materials on the other hand revolves around basic knowledge obtained by organic chemists. You will have to master organic chemistry no matter which scientific direction you will choose.
___
In this course, you will use your knowledge from organic chemistry I to study the chemistry of carbonyls, including carboxylic acids, ketones and aldehydes; alkynes; aromaticity; alcohols and phenols; and amines. Reactions with biological importance will be emphasized. At the end of this course, you will be able to explain new concepts in organic chemistry such as analyze and design chemical reactions and understand how some reactions in the industry are carried out.
____
Lectures: During lectures, I will convey the main message of the textbook with some additional thoughts of my own. I strongly advise you to attend the lecture. The exams will include the chapters from the textbook (McMurry, see below), some of the subtopics will not be discussed in class, and it is your responsibility to cover these subtopics.
Recitations: recitations will cover last week’s topics and will mainly include problem solving. It is strongly recommended to come to recitation after reviewing the lecture notes and solving a few problems. The recitation instructor is Nicole Soussana.
