dc.description.abstractEating disorders have always been existent, but have become particularly prevalent in modern Western culture. Eating disorders can cause severe mental and physical illnesses and can have an untold detrimental impact on the lives of the affected individuals. This paper will focus on the specific factors believed to contribute to the development of an eating disorder, with a particular emphasis on the adolescent years. A historical review of eating disorders will be given so as to provide relevant context to modern cases. The etiology and emotional toll of eating disorders will be considered through the personal accounts of individuals who have struggled with this illness.en_US
