Yosef's family has arrived safely in Alexandria, Egypt, which attracts a large number of emigrant Jews. Friction arises between the local Jews and the more sophisticated Jews of Spain. Yosef, a budding scholar, watches his father defuse the tense interactions among Jews of different backgrounds, which stimulates his interest in Jewish law. Following his father's sudden death, Yosef must decide on leaving to yeshiva world to support himself and his mother.en_US
