dc.description.abstract“I am not what I am, I am what I do with my hands... “(Louise Bourgeois) “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” ( Michelangelo) Sculpture is the practice of turning a concept into a three dimensional reality. A process of concrete production in real time and space. It is also creating something where there wasn’t something before as much magical as mechanical in its’ realization of the idea. Though all objects cannot be said to be sculpture, all made objects are sculptural as a result of their design as it enables the object’s functional value. We will investigate both form and function through making. The objects that result will be a record of your thinking, your problem solving abilities as well as your imagination, creativity and equally as important; commitment. All projects will start with a drawing, with written descriptions and relevant questions. We will work in a variety of materials exploring not only their functional appropriateness for the task at hand but their emotive and evocative connotations as they relate to supporting the object’s intention and life in the world. The objects we make will be both additive and reductive in their realization.¶Learning Outcomes¶ By the end of the semester students should be able to: Understand how a specific problem and its constraints can create design opportunities. Understand the role that scale, proportion, geometry as well as free flow of form play in the process of sculpting an object. How finish and texture support the project.¶Use a sketchbook to sketch and record ideas as well as explore multiple solutions to the challenge presented by your projects.¶ Document with a camera the process as well as final object that results from that process. ¶Above all that things thoughtfully considered, well made and successfully completed cannot be realized without fully committing to yourself and by extension your work.en_US
