The effects of eating disorders on oral health

Abstract

Eating disorders are life-threatening diseases that can have a severe effect on a person’s overall health, including their oral health. Many times negative changes in the oral cavity are the first manifestations or indications of someone suffering from an eating disorder. Bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, and binge eating disorder are all different types of disorders that impact the oral cavity in distinct ways to various degrees. Enamel erosion, dental caries, tonsillitis, gum disease, ulcers, and weakening of the jaw bone are all symptoms of eating disorders in the oral cavity. Malnutrition, an acidic environment from vomit and soft drinks, and a high carbohydrate diet are the main contributors to these numerous complications. Due to the wide range of effects in the oral cavity, dentists are often the first people to identify an eating disorder in a person. In cases where symptoms are present, dentists have the responsibility to discuss their findings with their patients.
