Abstract

Course goals: The field of human genetics has expanded enormously over the past decade. This knowledge has shaped advances in law, agriculture, and medicine. One goal of this course is to introduce students to the basic principles of genetics using human examples. In doing so, students will learn to apply simple rules of probability to determine possible genetic outcomes. A second goal of this course is to see how basic principles of genetics and exciting new technologies can be applied in clinical and legal settings such as the development of cancer therapies, determination of paternity, identification of criminal suspects, and correction of genetic errors.
