Abstract

It is the goal of this thesis to further bolster Saiman’s claim of looking to the Talmudic sugya as the means of tapping into, understanding, and engaging with the meaning of our tradition and our rituals. Specifically, the focus is the principle of semichat geulah l’tefillah and its related sugyot. Through using different techniques to analyze its Talmudic sugya, the goal is to not only come to a better appreciation of this specific concept in our daily prayer, but how both academic and traditional Talmud analysis can be used to come to a better understanding of halakhic concepts in general. And of course, this project is all under the umbrella of hoping to extrapolate a more meaningful understanding of halakha and its related concepts that allows the individual to relate to the whole gamut of meaning embedded in the halakhic system.7
