Abstract

Objectives of the course This semester we will focus on a variety of significant topics in Jewish thought. Through studying the writings of seminal Jewish thinkers from both the medieval and modern periods, we will develop a deeper understanding of the history of Jewish thought as well as achieve a greater appreciation for the relationship between philosophy and Judaism. The excerpts and passages that have been selected will allow us to reflect on a variety of fascinating problems: such as, the tension between reason and faith, the nature of Jewish chosenness, theodicy and the allegorical interpretation of Scripture. We will also examine issues pertaining to the meaning of the commandments and the religious value of family life. Seminars will be discussion-based with the intention of fostering student’s analytical and critical thinking skills.
