Abstract

July 4th is an important reminder of the freedoms our founders fought and sacrificed for to achieve our independence. For Jews in 2024, the limits of the freedom of speech this past year have been hotly debated. The freedom from fear is one we treasure but this right has been compromised since October 7th. The freedom to worship is difficult when synagogues and Jewish institutions have been vandalized and desecrated. We would be wise to remember the words of Roger Williams (d. 1683), founder of the colony of Rhode Island: "I doe humbly conceive that it is the will of the most high, and the expense and absolute duty of the civill powers to proclaim an absolute freedom...in all the world...that each...person may freely enjoy what worship their soul desirth."
