Abstract

Course objectives: This course will be an introduction to the rules and principles of תורה שבעל פה in all major aspects, especially הלכה . Since these rules are primarily relevant for early development of תורה שבעל פה , and that means the גמרא , we will emphasize methodologies of גמרא , and deal with later halacha to a lesser extent. We will learn a brief history of the Talmudic period, the attitudes and policies of the Amoraim and later authorities, common vocabulary, and the use of the Artscroll enhancement of the standard Vilna edition of the Shas. To illustrate the general methodologies, we will be using as our class text, פרק אלו נאמרים from מס' סוטה . No textbook is required for the course, and any materials will be provided. This course provides a strong basis for students who wish to continue formal learning, as well as for students who just want to have an understanding of Gemara basics. In class we will be learning the גמרא with relevant comments from רש"י and תוספות , and, in addition to the rules of תושבע"פ , the student is expected to master the flow of the גמרא , information, argumentation, and rulings, as well as learn to handle the various research tools on the דף , such as the תורה אור and עי ן משפט and מסורת השס . Furthermore, we will trace a ruling from the גמרא to the משנה ברורה and discover several nuances of the halachic process. Finally, all the handouts are posted on Canvas, as is a daily schedule.
