Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the barriers to the implementation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in cancer treatment centers and hospitals in the United States of America. This quantitative study sampled 71 oncology social workers who are currently employed at cancer treatment centers and hospitals nationwide. Participants were 18 years of age and older who self-identified as oncology social workers. Participants completed an anonymous online survey through Qualtrics, which included questions pertaining to workers’ knowledge of organizational barriers, currently existing research of CBT, and accessibility of the research studies. This study was also informed by Normalization Process Theory (NPT) and Social Exchange Theory (SET) to provide a supportive framework for the key concepts associated with organizational behavior related to the adoption and incorporation of new and unfamiliar methods of working. The results from this study will be used to help inform social work education, practice, policy, and research in order to help strengthen psychosocial services for oncology patients.
