This course is the first semester of the two semester General Chemistry course. The course begins with an introduction to the basics of chemistry, including concepts such as atoms, molecules and chemical reactions; and tools such as measurement and stoichiometry. We introduce the concept of energy and the first law of Thermodynamics. We move on to a study of atomic structure and apply this understanding to a discussion of chemical bonding and three-dimensional structure in molecules. Finally, we begin our study of the different phases of matter, to be continued next semester, with a look at the distinct properties of gases.en_US
