Abstract
I find that one of the best ways to understand gratitude is to study ingratitude. Entitlement can block gratitude, as can arrogance. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare expresses his disdain for those who cannot thank others: “I hate ingratitude more in a man than lying, vainness, babbling, drunkenness, or any taint of vice whose strong corruption inhabits our frail blood.” The philosopher David Hume also railed against ingratitude, especially against parents and called it “the most horrid and unnatural of crimes” in A Treatise on Human Nature.
