Abstract

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Jewish Sages and intellectual Jewish thinkers throughout the centuries have addressed themselves to the question of what is a Mitzvah and what is its fundamental intent. These thinkers also discuss whether one can apply human intellectual reasoning to Divine commandments and whether we should seek a rationale for the commandments. This course is a study of different approaches to the concept of Taamei Ha-Mitzvot through the lenses of giant Jewish scholars of different generations. The study of the Taamei Ha’mitzvot, according to most Jewish thinkers, elevates the Mitzvah. We will explore the physical and spiritual ramifications of following the commandments of God. Studying the rationale behind the commandments enhances our understanding of the rich Jewish tradition as it addresses human nature’s aspiration for spiritual satisfaction. In addition, a study of Taamei Ha’mitzvot generates enthusiasm and spontaneity in the fulfillment of God’s law.
