Abstract
In the ancient world, failure was often acknowledged and atoned for with the giving of a sacrifice. A sacrifice could not re-set or erase a mistake but created a ritualized break from it that required a significant loss or renunciation from the giver, let alone the animal. When we use the word sacrifice today, we usually mean that someone is ready to give up something of personal importance for a belief or an ideal or to achieve a particular result. On some level, the giving has to hurt to be meaningful.
