Abstract

This course is geared toward introducing students to an in-depth study of the Bible through various methodologies, exegesis and text. It will include the topical analysis of various themes and characters primarily in the Book of Genesis. Special emphasis will be placed on the study of human development, behavior and values as seen through the text. Analysis will include an introduction to commentaries, with a primary emphasis on Rashi. Topics that will be studied over the course of the year will include but not be limited to:

  1. Introductions to the Bible and Bible study
  2. The creation of the world
  3. The creation of man in G-d’s image
  4. The relationship between man and woman
  5. The sin of Adam and Chava
  6. The story of Cain and Abel
  7. Noach and the flood
  8. The Tower of Bavel
  9. The personalities and tests of Avraham and Sara
  10. The destruction of Sodom
  11. The sacrifice of Yitzchak
  12. Yitzchak and Rivka—shidduch and marriage
  13. Yaakov and Esav—rivalry and deception
  14. Rachel and Leah—sisters and wives
  15. The story of Yosef and his brothers
