| dc.description.abstract | Sports writing and journalism provides a powerful lens for which to analyze the role of sports in American society. Via a close reading analytical approach, it initially appears as though Roger Kahn was correct in his theory of sports. That is, athletics mirror society and serve as a theater of truth. As seen in the language in various articles from the early 1900s to the present day, sports reflect certain aspects of society on a microcosmic level. It is because of these qualities, namely religion and war, that sport resonates so deeply with American society. In other words, even to non-sports fans, there is something within them that is familiar, something that facilitates a greater role than leisure. (From Conclusion) | en_US |
