Abstract: In this course we will explore artistic forms that inherently instigate mixed media experimentation, such as: assemblage, artist books and zines, installation, collage (both digital and analog), wearable art and film/video. Historical and contemporary precedents will be introduced to illustrate possibilities for each project. Students will be encouraged to explore unfamiliar combinations of media to further develop their visual vocabulary and to discover processes that can provoke innovation in their own artistic practice. There will be a balanced focus between discussions of materials and techniques as well as conceptual development. Tutorials will emphasize sustainable artmaking methods (such as recycling and repurposing) and cover the use of adhesives, substrates, texture, and working with both natural and synthetic materials. Established studio approaches will be combined with opportunities for exploration with digital processes.
