Abstract: The class will discuss Shemita from the perspective of both Halacha and Hashkafa. The primary focus will be on the basic Halachos of Shemita, with an emphasis on the Halachos that apply to the consumer. Topics will include the status of different produce, issues relating to purchasing produce, the manner in which produce with Kedusha of Shemita is to be treated, and caring for one’s garden and yard during Shemita. Broader issues such as the Heter Mechira (the sale of land to non-Jews to avoid the challenges of the Shemita year), which have ramifications on a national and individual scale, will also be studied. As well, we will learn about Shemitas Kesafim, the cancellation of debts associated with the year of Shemita. The study of Hilchos Shemita should provide the student with an understanding of the Halachos of Shemita, the questions that arise, and ways to fulfill the Mitzvos in a proper and practical fashion. The goal is not simply to present the dry Halacha, but to offer context and background that enables one to understand differing views and preferences in terms of practice. We will also learn about the Gedolei Yisrael over the generations that enriched our understanding of Halacha in general and about Shemita in particular. As well, given that Shemita is such a striking and central Mitzva, we will spend time on the Hashkafa associated with the year of rest. These are lessons that apply to everyone, regardless of the time-frame or the geographic location of the individual.
