Abstract: Course Syllabus: The student will learn about the history and key terms of the Chassidic movement. Students will learn how to critically examine the philosophy of the Chassidic masters, as well as understand the historic context which gave rise to the Chassidic movement. Texts: Students will study the work “Flames of Faith: An Introduction to Chassidic Thought” by Rabbi Zev Reichman. There is no cost for this text as it can be found on Sefaria.org Course Topics: Why did Chassidut emerge in the eighteenth century? What is the Chassidic understanding of Shabbat? Why is there so much emphasis on the Grand Rabbi in Chassidic circles? How did the Chassidim understand the metaphysical dimension? What are the Sefirot? What is the nature of Yovel? Why is music so important in Chassidic life?
