Yosef's aristocratic father, Ephraim Caro, has become the leader of the Spanish Jews who had fled to Portugal in the wake of the Inquisition and who now found themselves again expelled. He assures his young son that the Jews will eventually be free of their persecutors to follow the Torah in peace.
