Yosef's family has arrived safely in Alexandria, Egypt, which attracts a large number of emigrant Jews. Friction arises between the local Jews and the more sophisticated Jews of Spain. Yosef, a budding scholar, watches his father defuse the tense interactions among Jews of different backgrounds, which stimulates his interest in Jewish law.
