Abstract: Learn about building systems from ancient Egypt to post-modern Paris. Compare buildings from different eras and from different cultures. The result will be the basis for an architectural vocabulary and a greater consciousness of the built environment. We shall explore the elements of architecture from domes to space frames, from open-air ventilation to full climate control, and from stone load-bearing walls to light-weight glass curtain walls. We shall examine not only work of the masters of the discipline, but also architecture without architects. This introductory course will include lectures, discussion, presentations by class members, and numerous on-site visits.
