Abstract: | Course Description:¶ Through a combination of classroom lecture, demonstrations, labs, and hands-on projects, students will encounter principles of digital photography and digital workflow to create individual and series of digital photographs in color and/or black and white.¶ This course is an introduction to the workings of light, form, content, and the tools required to create digital photographs. Manual camera skills and digital file processing are the primary technical concerns of this course. In addition to learning techniques for producing digital photographs, students will become acquainted with historical and contemporary photography, and the critical evaluation of photographs.¶ Throughout the semester, issues of form, composition, light and motion will be discussed in the context of students’ own production. This course is designed to serve students with no prior background in photography as well as those with considerable experience with picture taking. Students will be introduced to image editing software for still images. The primary application will be Adobe Lightroom. Additionally, Photoshop to complement use of Lightroom. Students will be exposed to various output methods and digital printin¶ Course Objectives:¶ At the end of the course, you should have a foundational understanding of:¶ • The use and functions of a digital camera (Manual DSLR) • Different file formats (JPEG, TIFF, DNG, RAW) for taking and editing photographs • Understanding of role of Metadata information • Conversion of color files to black and white • Differences in color digital color spaces (sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto) • Understanding of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO • Depth of Field • Proper exposure and consistent white balance • Integration of Lightroom and Photoshop • The use of Lightroom to organize, edit, and output your digital files • Personal expression through photographic images • Selecting and sequencing images • Critiquing your own and other’s photographs • Presentation of your photographs as a portfolio • Fine Art Digital Printmaking Workflow |
