Abstract: Course Description¶ The purpose of this course is to develop a deeper understanding of numbers in the real number system. The challenge is to understand the “whys” of mathematical procedures and not just the “hows.” Connecting mathematical concepts to the real world will also be explored. ¶Essential Understandings (Big Ideas) This course will explore the underlying concepts of the real number system, integers, fractions and irrational numbers and their operations and applications to critical thinking problems. The integration of graphing equations, geometry, probability, and statistics will strengthen the students’ understanding of the mathematical system. ¶Essential Questions What is the real number system? What are rational and irrational numbers? What mathematical operations do we use to get the results we are looking for? Why do these steps work? How are numbers used in the real world?
