Abstract: | The MC1R gene seems to not only affect hair color but also has many medical and psychological implications. The MC1R gene is mainly associated with red hair, which has been known to be associated with certain stereotypes. Those with a mutation of the MC1R gene are known to require more anesthesia and have differences in pain tolerance levels than those who don’t possess the gene. This paper aims to explore whether the stereotypes based on the MC1R gene and its associated phenotype, have a scientific basis, or if they are purely anecdotal. If there is a scientific basis for the assumptions, the paper will delve deeply into the genetic backing of these stereotypes. Additionally, this paper explores future research involving the MC1R gene that will be conducted with the intention of advancing the current understanding of the gene. |
