Abstract: Comments on an article by J. A. Martenstyn et al. (see record 2021-17779-001). Martenstyn et al. conducted a meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy of existing interventions for compulsive exercise in adolescents and adults with eating disorders (EDs) or muscle dysmorphia (MD). They included sole interventions for compulsive exercise as well as interventions that were part of a broader treatment program targeting ED or MD symptoms. Martenstyn et al. highlighted that current interventions for compulsive exercise are somewhat effective. However, it remains unclear what type of intervention is most effective for treating EDs, and there is a lack of direction on how to treat compulsive exercise in individuals with MD.
